Anemic Career Growth Is Pushing Away Young Talent

Pros

-The hours. I rarely had to work more than 40 hours a week. -The projects. I worked on a wide variety of large-scale infrastructure projects from bridges, to railroads, to rest area development, to resilience grants, to new highways.

Cons

-Skill development. Junior staff were almost discouraged from learning anything new under the pressures of remaining billable. -Upward Mobility. Promotions took too long and salary growth was anemic--a promotion only yielded a 5 to 7% raise, the equivalent of a public sector step up. Most other companies--not to mention the public sector--do a better job at recognizing and rewarding young talent.
