Treats junior staff terribly!

Pros

Flexible hours, good mission, builds experience

Cons

One of the most toxic and secretive HR structures and compensation packages of anywhere I have worked. For junior employees, there is no value in prior work experience and/or graduate degrees. I know three people with identical compensation, but one has only a BA, one has an MSC no prior experience, one has an MSC 3 yrs prior experience. This is standard at WRI. If you have a MSC from Stanford or a BA from No-Name Liberal Arts School, you will have identical compensation. This is the kind of place to get on your resume and then get out of as fast as possible to find an organization that actually values the employees who are generating the work on a day-to-day level.

Pros

Everyone at WRI is dedicated to making the world a better place and they do have a real (if limited) impact. Their international network is impressive.

Cons

Staff and management live in a world of unexamined privilege. Growth has been uncontrolled and chaotic and not terribly strategic. Firm leadership is needed.

Pros

Grants and Finance team for the Cities program that is very supportive, hard-working, and collaborative.

Cons

Unfortunately, this role relies more on the relationships with project managers and directors who manage funds. There was a wide range of personalities, from indifferent to micromanaging, that makes the job a difficult balancing act. Staff are undercompensated and there is a high level of turnover due to this and burnout. It was not uncommon for me to have 12+ hour workdays to meet deadlines.
