Pros

They have computers and offices. You get a desk and chair.

Cons

Don't ask me I was only there for 10 years. Internal employee surveys and external clients surveys rate AECOM as one of the worst companies. Not surprisingly growth and profit is going backwards. This firm only survives because some silly people on Wall St keep throwing money at them for another acquisition which adds no value. If you are thinking of accepting an offer of employment at AECOM here are my tips: 1. If you are interested in serving clients, being rewarded, have initiative, have a work ethic and independent thought be prepared to turn out the lights when you leave, endure endless internal meetings about AECOM, try not to feel invalidated and don't forget a movie voucher is not cheap; have you seen what it costs to get into the movies these days. 2. Disconnect your brain and enjoy the world of forms, processes, procedures, internal meetings, risk avoidance, no responsibility, weak decision making, no leadership and day to day crisis management. AECOM believes process drives performance and client service. That is your pathway to promotion. 3. Having processes on-line just makes it so easy and efficient, doesn't it, doesn't it! 4. Don't wait for any training. 5. Innovation and thought leadership are a creation of the PR department for clients - there is no expectation to actually demonstrate these things. At AECOM innovation = risk, and risk is to avoided at all costs. 6. The solution to every problem is another form, another sign off or delegation of authority. In fact there are internal solutions just trying to find a problem. 7. AECOM lawyers are your friend and are there to help make your job easier. 8. Enjoy having three bosses. 9. Don't be alarmed - that stinging feeling will be somebody tattooing a cross hair on your back, you are only as good as last weeks utilisation. 10. Try to imagine what it is like to be engaged and empowered; learn to smile. 11. Don't expect to see the values and behaviours of the firm displayed by senior management. Learn to do what leaders say, not what they do. 12. Marvel at the seemingly countless 'matrix' roles held by senior people with amazing titles who are not responsible for delivery work, talking with clients, winning work or managing teams. They are far to important to show up to meetings on-time. Bow at the appropriate time. 13. The vision, strategy and business plan is somewhere online. Just focus on the financial plan the accountants give you There is a plan for everything, you just need to find it - relax nobody will be following it. 14. AECOM is the biggest professional services firm in the world - your ideas and suggested improvements are very welcome. How is the tattoo scar healing? 15. Global mobility is a term invented by the PR people. Lower your expectations. 16. Quality..yep those PR people are work again. Don't tell the clients.

Pros

The projects and the people are great. The global nature of the company provides a unique set of experiences for staff. For up and coming engineers, designers, and architects, there are great experiences to be had. Just don't plan to make it a long term career here. Budget cuts and layoffs are an annual way of life.

Cons

The CEO is an accountant and the newly named President is an accountant, but it's not an accounting firm. The bean counters are running one of the world's largest architecture and engineering firms, and they're doing it like... accountants. Since the new management team took control, diversity has gone out the window. Women in leaderships positions have been fired, forced to retire, or left voluntarily. Diversity on the new management team consists of white males who have hair and white males who are bald. Check out the website and you'll see. Google why Michael Burke left KPMG. The pay is generally below market. A lot of fear and intimidation.
