Pros

Work can vary from entry-level up to senior positions. You can get advancement in career and learn new things - if you're willing to (unfortunately company won't help you much...) Entry-level work can be mind-numbing, but there is possibility to move forward towards more complex stuff. Depending on position and team, you have possibility to really work flexible hours - as long as you are available for major project or customer events and get the work done. You get issued with laptop and internet connectivity/VPN to work from home if you have work outside normal business hours. I am lucky that my team has very low fluctuation, very good and helpful people and great relationships within teams.

Cons

- Shift hours to cover different regions, which many people find unacceptable. - You are too tied to your position, your role, even though your work may be interesting you suffer being too specialized, compared to broader spectrum of knowledge you need to maintain in smaller companies. - Poor opportunities for training provided by employer. Most of the things you need to learn to advance are from your own resources. - Salary is OK for this region - if you negotiate it during hiring process. Then you are stuck with few percent/year even on promotion or when changing roles. Job-hop to advance money-wise. - Company is too much tied by rules that may not make sense given how fast IT is growing. - Lower lvevel managers lack proactivity and fail to step-up for their teams. - Decisions take too long and are not communicated properly

Pros

Every Day is different. You learn about the ins and outs of every business. Senior Management has made additions to the products offered. AT&T Advertising now offers Print Yellow Pages, Direct Mail, YP.com, YP mobile, texting services, Online Reputation Management, Online Display Advertising and Search Engine Marketing (Google, Yahoo, Bing...etc). Tremendous initial training for those new to the advertising world and continuous training for new products. Uncapped commissions. Reaching the top tier will turn a new $100 monthly sale or $1,200 annual sale into $350 commission. Great benefits. This is one of the few "Unionized" organizations. Should a problem arise, it's nice to know someone has your back. 2 weeks of paid vacation and 2 additional holidays. Paid week off from 12/25 to 1/01.

Cons

Tremendous Pressure to achieve quotas which are unattainable. Commissions are your livelihood. If you're not selling, then you will struggle financially. The commissions have recently changed and will pay top dollar for the top 5% of sales reps. The commission is based on a tier system which refreshes every year. So if you reach the top tier in November you only enjoy the high incentive pay for 1 month. No residual income. In the 1st tier renewal of an existing advertising program of $1,000 per month or $12,000 per year = $120 (10%) in commission. Increasing this advertiser by $1000 per month or $24,000 per year = $800+$120 = $920. That is $920 commission on a $24,000 sale, that is less than 4% of the yearly revenue. In the 1st tier, New program's match 100% of one month of advertising. Most managers micro-manage. Sales reps sell products and the one's responsible for fulfilling the product seem to drop the ball more than 50% of the time which requires a lot of explaining and apologizing and charge-backs that come out of your commission. The sick policy for AT&T is: Don't get sick. The attendance policy is: Don't be late. Very structured working environment. The first 6 months of employment are probationary. No health, no benefits except 401k and no personal time.

Pros

If you plan on spending a long time with one company and want to build a long term career, this is a great place for you. The LDP program gives you lots of exposure to different projects. Once you become an "LDP" you are branded as someone who is a fast tracker and you will be tapped for various opportunities over your peers. Also has some great benefits.

Cons

Can be very bureaucratic (the downside of working at any large company). To succeed, you have got to have that "go-getter" attitude. Don't expect for anyone to hand you anything. If you want to advance in the company, be prepared to spend a lot of time in Dallas. Promotions are also sparse. The union is an absolute headache to work with. Unfortunately there is little you can do about this. Just put in your time with the management rotation, and quickly move on.
