Pros

ARC has a great mission. The work environment is very casual. There are many women in local management.

Cons

National management makes poor decisions because they are out of touch with their local operations. Such as money saving measures will often cost more than previous models, or making demands of budgets that demonstrate they have not even looked at said budgets. In restructuring new positions were found for managers but staff was let go. Restructuring means job loses and that is painful for everyone. But don't fire a dozen of us and send emails asking us to congratulate our new vice president. Worse, announcements about restructuring and job loses are made several months before the specific details are available. That sort of uncertainty makes employee retention and productivity difficult. A big raise for the year is still less than inflation. Very expensive technology decisions are made by people who don't get tech.

We appreciate your review, and are happy to read your praise for our mission and commitment to diversity. Thank you for bringing to our attention the details of your experience during our recent restructuring, which occurred in response to ongoing changes in the biomedical industry. We agree that sensitivity and good communication are vital during such times of change, and are sorry to hear that this did not appear to be the case in your situation, as you described. We will pass this information on to our leadership team. In an effort to promote transparency, we encourage employees to attend our periodic Town Hall meetings, where they can get regular updates on organizational happenings, as well as pose questions such as those you posted here.

Pros

The pros are that the compensation is better than you will get at most non-profit organizations.

Cons

Middle managers openly hostile to employees. Screaming and swearing at employees is accepted, and if you bring abusive behavior to superiors' attention it is made clear to you that you are free to leave (and maybe not so free to stay). On top of that the organization is poorly organized, there is a very high turnover and few opportunities to advance beyond entry-level positions.

Under no circumstances does the American Red Cross tolerate abusive behavior in the workplace. We encourage you to reach out to your HR Advisor or the Concern Connection line, the number for which can be found on our intranet site.

Pros

had wonderful boss and liked the people I worked with. Mission is part of us.

Cons

even though I liked the people I worked with, we were all so overworked all we did was complain. Highly stressful and never "got away from work" as you were expected to work normal business hours, then all of your blood drives, which could be two hours away and could last until 7-9 PM. If you didn't have at least one or two drives on most weekends, you almost considered yourself on vacation!! Slave to telephone and emails: expected to always answer your cell and your emails, even on your REAL vacation. People lost vacation hours every year due to just not having time to take it, and even when you did, felt like you were on call. Even though I worked 9 months before I was downsized, company refused to pro-rate year end bonus.
