Pros

It offers great benefits and pretty great starting pay for a retail job. If you like printing and production-related stuff and making things, then the work can be fun at times. I stayed as long as I have because the pay is good and they do yearly raises which are performance-dependent, but fair. I also really enjoy printing and running production so I take pride in the jobs that I produce and that side of the job is pretty fun.

Cons

You have to deal with a lot of corporate nonsense and the higher ups usually have no sense of what it is actually like to work in center. There’s lots of pointless metrics and they’re trying to make it more sales based even though we’re a print shop. Also having to deal with peoples’ package issues can be pretty annoying. We’re just a retail center and have no control over deliveries or drivers, but we end up being the point of contact for customers experiencing issues so we often have to mitigate those problems. It also really depends on who you’re store manager is. I’ve had really awesome managers and also really awful ones and that will really change the working environment. When coming in new, this job requires patience and commitment because it is A LOT to learn. Most new hires don’t realize how long it can take to learn all the printing stuff, which can be frustrating. I tell people it usually takes a good year until you’re comfortable with doing most things , and even then it usually takes longer to really feel like you know what you’re doing with confidence.

Pros

I picked up a lot of skills that helped me get a better job in a different field. Looks good on your resume. Good benefits and the pay is competitive. Interesting, varied work that I enjoyed.

Cons

"Key phrases" have to be used with every customer, regardless of the situation or the customer's needs. There is a checklist and you will be graded on use by your boss, their boss, and mystery shoppers. You can be fired for not using the key phrases, although I never saw that happen. Everyone was too scared of losing their jobs. "Write ups" occurred regularly for missing a phrase or for not meeting metrics. There are metrics for everything. You're required to keep track of a lot of them on paper daily and turn them in. Others are computer generated based on sales. These metrics can change often with little to no explanation, and have very little to do with what's actually happening on the floor. Fear-based leadership was a constant. Meet those metrics, use the key phrases, or lose your job. Fedex Office has thousands of applicants weekly, and you can and will be replaced. The scheduling system changed in my last year with the company. Suddenly everyone had to be available for all hours, regardless of their personal or medical situation. I would not recommend this job or this side of the company to anyone.

Pros

When I become a regional manager with another company I have learned what not to do.

Cons

Regional management and above are very out of touch with how the team members feel.
