Pros

- Best place to get field research experience esp. before pursuing a PhD! - Depending on project, chance to learn tremendously... if PIs are reasonable!

Cons

- Negligible management support - Lousy pay - Intense stress and long hours - Zero career growth prospects within the organization - Expect zero recognition for all your blood, sweat and tears! - If PA/PC, prepare to take the fall for anything that goes wrong with the project, even if it happened before your recruitment!

Pros

The work you do will contribute to important dialogue in international development. You will work with very intelligent, inspiring, and self-motivated colleagues. If you are proactive, you have a ton of room for professional development and doing work you are passionate about.

Cons

IPA is coming to grips with its historic under-investment in the fundamental components that make any organization function, like finance, legal, and HR. I believe senior leadership is aware of these shortcomings, and investing in them now. However, it is still going to be a bumpy road for the next year with respect to these important support functions.
