Pros

I loved working with people from all over the world, and refugee resettlement is obviously very rewarding work--helping people who have experienced unimaginable suffering to start a new life. If you are looking for a rich, cultural experience and fulfilling work helping people, you will likely find IRC an exciting, enjoyable place to work. I have a masters in social work, and the work at IRC fit well with my values. Most clients--though they don't have much by our standards when they arrive--are so thankful to be starting a new life here where they can feel safe and have their physical needs met. They trust you immediately to help them get on their feet here in the U.S., and it's very inspiring to watch them adapt. Working with refugees is a constant reminder that we are so blessed to live here.

Cons

In social services, you typically have limited resources and high turnover. That is the case with IRC as well. You want to be able to help each client more, but the amount of resources for each refugee family is allocated by the government. That can be frustrating.

Pros

-- Great mission -- Money raised really goes to the people being served -- Very talented, dedicated staff members -- Staff is very aware of and dedicated to the mission -- Good benefits -- Generous sick time

Cons

-- Very top heavy organization with many directors, associate directors, deputy directors, etc. -- Large salary gap between the higher ups and those lower down with little opportunity for middle ground -- Very bureaucratic with many levels of to go through before things get done -- Heavy reliance on consultants -- Power struggles at the top -- Little connection of HQ staff to the field.

Pros

IRC has a broad impact and strong programming in places that need it most. The organization is well respected in the humanitarian community as hiring very qualified people--smart and dedicated. People seem to most like either working in the field or in senior management at the HQ level. IRC seems to be continuing to grow.

Cons

IRC is often more reactive than proactive so it often felt like playing catch-up, which perhaps is the nature for working for a humanitarian organization. It is extremely difficult to get a job unless you know someone who can get your application out of the depths of HR. IRC is generally regarded as one of the lower-paying NGOs and staff benefits and recognition are lacking. Staff are very overworked and because of the NGO, emergency response nature, many staff seemed to almost compete to be considered the most overworked/dedicated. Hard to get promoted because of power structures, politics, and high competition for positions.
