Pros

If you are looking for stability and benefts- it's second to none. The employee plan is quite comprehensive. There is a lot of room for movement within the KP system and hence people stay for very long periods of time.

Cons

Kaiser Oakland is an "turnaround" hospital hat has shown no movement in the actual improvement in the environment, care or culture. The relationship between union and managemen (and Hospital and Medical Group) t is unproductive, self motivated and unfocused on patient care. Mediocrity is everywhere at the staff level and at the management level it's all about power and backstabbing.

Pros

The benefits are second to none, particularly healthcare benefits which include unlimited outpatient visits, ER visits, and hospitalization for yourself and dependents as well as retirement benefits which include a 401k, Keogh, and pension. The people are friendly and overall the culture is very positive and supportive.

Cons

There is no cap on patient case loads and the demand is HIGH. You will continue to take new patients daily even if you do not have any follow-up availability for months out and it is very difficult to see a patient more frequently than once every 3 months at the most which brings up frustration for patients and physicians alike. There is not a lot of vacation time offered and it must be requested a minimum of 5 months in advance. Also, every hour of your schedule is scrupulously monitored. For example, if you generally work a 10-hour day and are off on Thanksgiving, 2 hours will be removed from your vacation time because holidays are only provided for up to 8 hours.

Toxic culture - it's really bad

Pros

Pay and benefits are good

Cons

This a place where unqualified managers who used the buddy system to get where they are in the organization abuse you, micromanage you, make stuff up, and dispose of you when they see in your eyes you're on to the them. As a result, those who remain are C-level employees or A-level employees staying low key and not working to their potential. Do NOT speak up, no matter what they tell you - it will be the beginning of the end for you. Don't think it will be different for you. Go somewhere else before you enter into this mess. They will smile at you in the hallway and then throw you under the bus once they turn the corner. And even though we all know HR is not an advocate for employees, they will protect SVPs and above at all costs and try to wear you down.
