Low morale, Layoffs, and a Sad Decline

Pros

Very talented, dedicated people. Good salary and benefits. Attractive building. Pleasant office space. Nice views from Hoboken. Some prestige--name recognition around the world (at least in the insurance industry).

Cons

Lots of layoffs in IT. Low morale. Everyone worried that the axe will fall on them. Tendency to leave people stuck in same position for years--you have to really be assertive to avoid getting stuck. Frequent leadership changes with corresponding changes in culture/direction. Feeling that employees are taken for granted. Management does not seem to care at all about losing good people. In fact, they've been actively trying to get rid of people to reduce payroll. There seems to be a perception around the firm that IT doesn't really help to maximize profit--it provides too little bang for the buck.

Pros

To get the basis fundamentals of insurance and risk managment.

Cons

Moral is low, upper management cuts expenses (ie cheaper office supplies, holiday potlucks) but the higher level positions are still allowed to spend enormous amounts of money for traveling. People are promoted not based on merit or hard work but instead of how connected you are in the company. Too many politics and egos that trickles down to the cr's who are left with all the work.

Pros

If you are in the right area (i.e. London or New York) the opportunities for career progression are there, Otherwise things are limited. The support for professional qualifications is also pretty good. Our office gives free lunch (subsidized from pay).

Cons

Being in a regional office means terrible pay and opportunities. Currently there seems to be a financial squeeze (although this is not unusual for the sector) which means everything from stationery to bonuses are being cut drastically. Senior management can never see a project or idea through to completion, which has left a large number of highly paid people sitting around with nothing to do.
