Pros

Opportunity to make a real difference. Scale of products, and the impact of the decisions you make. Wireless is dynamic and constantly changing, keeps the job fun as management is figuring things out.

Cons

Horribly uncompetitive place to work -- compensation is 20-40k below market, benefits are poor, outdated office is far in the suburbs. Generally inflexible work environment - strong work from the office culture is back June 1.

It's a Corporation that Thrives from Consumerism

Pros

- If you understand that this is a corporation in a consumeristic environment, you'll be able to wrap your head around being a cog in a machine - If you are patient and play the game correctly, there is plenty of opportunity. You just have to wait out churn. - The people you work with (peer to peer) are awesome - everyone bonds over how awful the company is, and that makes it a bit more bearable

Cons

- Opportunity is a double edge sword because it only becomes available when someone leaves... and a lot of people leave. - Incompetence is promoted due to churn. - There is no accountability for senior leadership, c-suite, and chairman - they're "above" that. - Culture surveys are dismissed by leadership due to "nuance" and "misalignment" with how people respond. - Some departments are hard to leave because they blackball you by spreading falsities about attitude - even when your performance review and HR record is in good standing and you're listed as a high-performer; departments just don't want to lose headcount. -Pay is not competitive, it is defined by their view of your market value. Asking for raises is a pain and 5% is seen as a pay raise. - CEO is ok as a person/leader on his own, but he's a puppet for Charlie's will - so there's really not a lot to talk to about his influence. He's very much a figure head. - DE&I efforts are grassroots, there is no investment in these changes from HR - It is a serious boys club - Controlling methods of core hours, lack of flexibility to work from home (COVID aside), and no maternity/paternity leave are huge flaws - Tenure doesn't matter, loyalty doesn't matter, you are just a number and they can easily replace you

Pros

Working in TV is fun. It's interesting to gain exposure to the customer base, the way the television industry works, etc. There are tons of truly fantastic people. They say you're compensated in "opportunity" which is a way to pay less, but it's also absolutely true - very junior / inexperienced employees are given roles and responsibilities they would otherwise NEVER be given elsewhere. It's a good place to learn - I viewed it as an extended paid internship that gave me fantastic job opportunities elsewhere.

Cons

The experience can vary WIDELY depending on the team. I had a great experience with multiple managers spread over several years, but I had friends who experienced unspeakable conditions (30-hour work days regularly, being berated and called "retarded" by their managers, etc.) Ultimately, the infamous culture originates with Charlie (who founded the company and retains complete control) and trickles all the way down. DISH is an extremely difficult place to be a people manager - you're completely stuck owning the unpopular messages of Charlie (no maternity leave; building access badge report time stamps, etc.) People complain about C-Suite level employees not changing these things, but they are powerless- Charlie routinely hires smart executives and then ignores their expertise and does whatever he wants until they get tired of trying and leave. The way to have a good experience here is to find a pocket of great people (and managers) who can insulate you from the culture.
