Great Experience For Some

Pros

Exposure to some big clients and larger network of designers at Gensler. You can learn a lot from working here at some points in your career. Fun after-hours culture.

Cons

Project work in the SF office is mostly architectural and drab. Unless you love working on massive buildings and airports for years, or barely designing tech offices, don’t expect too much when it comes to hands-on design. The Gensler office itself is uninspiring and awful except for the kitchen (they pretty much let interns design the new office in SF). Not enough desks and doesn’t in any way feel like a creative office or top caliber design firm. Nazi- like policies for pinup spaces and creative areas that are spearheaded by a select few in the office who are besties with the managing principals. Favoritism and politics is a very real thing here and hypocrisy is rampant... once you move up the ladder you discover how awful it really is. Staff is constantly overworked. I was able to play the game but the further I got I realized how much I didn’t want to be a part of it all. Leadership is a mess and I did not feel like I could trust HR for various reasons. Overall I left feeling like I was under recognized and under compensated for some pretty major accomplishments to the firm.

A good company

Pros

Comparatively to other firms, Gensler has a lot of perks, especially the 401k/profit sharing program. People are great — definitely a work hard, play hard culture.

Cons

Management constantly is chasing work and doesn’t spend enough time focused on staff needs. ‘Getting the account’ sometimes seems to be more important than the work being fulfilling to staff.
