Pros

wonderful coffee, smart people, lots of opportunities for learning. a great place for self-starters to learn new skills. A great place to spend a few years of your career. Good work-life balance.

Cons

A lot of fatigue at HQ with regards to discussion of "ownership" and "process." Responsibilities are not in any way clearly explained, so the cycle of meetings is endless and the number of people that have to be consulted before anything is decided is way too large. After multiple reorgs, the discussions and problems are still the same. Way too many 'product owners' and not enough analysts or engineers to support the product goals. SMEs are rarely recognized, and many of the people who make key decisions don't care about their tech teams. Starbucks can be so consensus-driven as to be paralyzed, and if you ask management to do something they will often outsource their own job back to you, declining to give guidance, feedback or structure.

Pros

Benefits and vacation are comparable with the area. Plenty of coffee to drink. Tuition reimbursement for those who want to pursue a college degree.

Cons

If you want to drink the kool-aide then you will fit in great. Technology group is very sub par. Company has no interesting in growing its infrastructure to the level it should be. Very culture driven. Not a great place for minorities to advance, hence the Philly incident.

Pros

IF you work in the right department (anything but IT) the company's mission and values translate into your daily work. This company walks the talk and Howard's passion and humanity is felt throughout the company. Good benefits (medical deductible is a little high), salary and growth opportunities if you are are the right team. For the most part, really great and talented people to work with. Good work-life balance if you manager is understanding.

Cons

If you are in IT you might as well be working for a different company. There is no humanity or professional respect in IT. The number of contractors and consultants have created a workforce that is completely removed from Starbucks core values. Behavior (like bullying, yelling, swearing and mocking) that wouldn't be allowed anywhere else in the company, is excused and tolerated in IT. Stop re-org'ing, moving bad people around doesn't fix things, it only creates more discourse and new people have to deal with their bad behavior.
