Pros

Field work cool company culture (when it was still Wood) Opportunities for OT pay; time and a half (when it was still Wood) Exciting projects Cool coworkers and project managers Abundant access to field equipment, tools and machinery

Cons

Lack of direction on workflow duties (figure it out yourself) Difficult to find consistent long-term work on cyclical projects; lots of instability and anxiety Benefits get super slashed after merging with WSP Long hours with no OT pay since merging with WSP Cliquey work environment often feeling like an outsider/office gossip Difficult to promote to higher salary - huge hierarchy with too many doors to knock on - your project managers can’t move things up the corporate chain without a huge amount of resistance and backlash

Pros

Big company and fancy projects

Cons

I was initially hired by Capita REI, which later merged with WSP. In the beginning, things went well, but after the merger, there were challenges due to a lack of available projects. I was unexpectedly assigned responsibilities not suitable for my title, a director insisted that i'll do Category 3 checks involving reinforcement and design assessments, which are tasks typically handled by engineers rather than technicians in larger companies like WSP. Despite seeking assistance from a WSP director, I didn’t receive adequate support. One director who was helpful eventually left the team, and afterward, I was given responsibilities outside my role's typical scope, by these two remaining ex Capita directors. The expectations for task delegation appeared inconsistent with standard UK industry working practices, where roles and responsibilities are usually well-defined, especially in big companies like WSP. Unfortunately, my concerns were not heard from ex Capita HR, and I felt unfairly judged by HR without an opportunity to explain my perspective. I have always valued inclusivity and professionalism in the workplace, and I was deeply disappointed by how the situation was handled. I hope future improvements in communication and understanding can benefit others in similar roles.
