Pros
There is much room for creativity and self-determination in managing projects-- in fact, you're basically on your own out there! (You have to find your own housing, set up your own work structure and office, and troubleshoot problems great and small.) The emphasis is on results. There are high standards in adhering to experimental protocols for projects.
Cons
Little professional support; either unresponsive or demanding project investigators; field staff often taken for granted by HQ heads. Compensation is barely enough to live by. Be prepared, if working in the field, to live humbly. "Too much intellect, not enough heart" when it comes to projects.
