Pros

You will lean RCT, power calc first hand. You will have the opportunity to apply microeconomics and statistics to real-life situation. Will lean or improve academic writing. You will discover other countries/continents/cultures while working

Cons

-Most research assistant/analyst/coordinator/associate positions are based outside US. -Not easy to transition back to US office: no systematic structure in place to integrate workers who have been in the field for years and wanted to come back to the US and continue working for IPA. -Salary: hhhmmmm... just survival. Can't save!! -Vacation/RnR return ticket: very tricky in your contract; its basically one return ticket every 2 years. Negotiate 1 return ticket per 12 months, in addition to your 1st and last ticket, unless you plan staying for less than 2 years.

Pros

Great connections. There are some great people there who are really committed to the work. Good health insurance while living abroad.

Cons

Intrinsically poor organization. Unless you work in the main office, the work is project based, so you really work for and are dependent on the investigator running your project, but are also expected to report to your local director (if you are even lucky enough to have one). However these two "supervisors" do not have the same agenda and priorities. This makes for many an awkward situation. Poor communication from HQ to local staff. No support for people doing fieldwork. Retched pay. High turnover.

Satisfying, but extremely stressful

Pros

A great opportunity to gain experience in managing multiple, complex responsibilities. I am very happy with the work that I do in theory, appreciate the organization's mission, and proud to talk about my job. I also know that when my contract ends, I will have something substantial on my resume that will help me land the next job much more easily.

Cons

I have never worked in such a stressful environment, nor felt so under-appreciated. Project staff are given an incredible amount of responsibility and pressure, with very little or no guidance. Management gives unreasonable deadlines, and regularly makes demands for long nights or meetings on weekends. Nearly no praise is given for a job well done, but plenty of criticism is given for failing to meet impossible or unknown standards.
