Pros

-you gain experience on interpretation

Cons

-extremely low pay for the level of stress that you'll have to deal with -you have to deal with rude customers (REPs) and (LEPs) who can't even speak their own native language correctly -horrible audio quality on calls -company treats you as if you are a machine to them -never ending back to back -you WILL get burned out, and company will not care -no benefits whatsoever in working with them -no growth in the company at all -will have you interpret medical specialty calls without any real training and/or certification -don't provide any credentials or certification -will make you take and translate calls that you have no training for, like legal (for courts) and finance. -likes to use outsourcing to other companies and contries with very low pay

Outsourced

Pros

You get a lot of experience without the need of a degree or special certification, good training and monitoring.

Cons

I am an outsourced employee from Mexico working for around $6 an hour, When you are working with the phone app you get at least 3–5 minutes between calls but with their computer program you get 0, and now you have to fill questioners. So, no time to reflect, study, or improve in between calls. We have protocols for long calls and when exhaustion is affecting your ability to interpret, which is funny since, if you transfer the call and hang up you will get another one immediately, so no time to reset from that "exhaustion in a long call". All of that for $6/h (currently, for a medical interpreter), it could be alright if the company was Mexico based, but it is a US based company, so it looks that they are trying so spend less in employees.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate hearing about your personal experience. As a “Great Place to Work” we really care about our interpreters and are continuously working on improvements to make taking calls for us even better. We have many resources, including a team of managers available to support and help our interpreters grow and be successful. Language access can be far more than transactional. It is not the mere exchange of words, as one would trade one currency for another. When done right, it is transformational, allowing our clients to understand not just what their customers say, but what they mean. If you have any further feedback to share, please email us at interpretercommunications@languageline.com.
